Accutas for Malaria

Malaria is the leading parasitic disease worldwide. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 207 million cases and 627,000 deaths occurred in 2012. The vast majority of these cases occurred in Africa (Source: USA Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Approximately 500 million malaria tests were performed in 2013 (Source: World Health Organization). The current practice in the field is to use rapid diagnostic test strips which have low sensitivity (accuracy) or microscopy which is often unavailable in the field as it requires reliable power and skilled technicians.

The Aquila solution for malaria testing will bring fast turnaround and sensitive molecular diagnostics out of the laboratory and into the field. Aquila will be field testing its system in the first six months of 2016 with sales and marketing to follow later in the calendar year. Applications for malaria testing include surveillance and elimination campaigns and to support vaccine development programs.
